What Does It Mean to Trust in God?


This verse succinctly captures the essence of trust- relying completely on God rather than our limited understanding. However, in today’s world, trusting in God can be challenging. Society bombards us with messages of self-sufficiency and independence, urging us to rely solely on our abilities and resources. Amid these societal pressures, trusting in God may seem counterintuitive or even foolish. We may question whether we can truly depend on Him when the world tells us to rely on ourselves.

I, too, grappled with these doubts and uncertainties. Like many, I turned to motivational speeches and self-help books for guidance and inspiration. While these resources provided temporary motivation, I soon realized their limitations. They offered fleeting encouragement, like fuel that burns brightly but quickly fades away. It was through this journey that I came to a profound realization that- 

The Source of a thing is its Sustenance.

God is my source and trusting in Him isn’t just a suggestion. If I must win at life, I must depend entirely on Him.

Trusting in God requires us to let go of our preconceived notions, intelligence, and limited understanding and relinquish control completely. It is an act of faith, believing that He knows what’s best for us even if we can’t see the way forward. And while it may be difficult at times, the rewards of trusting in God far outweigh the challenges. Trusting in God isn’t a sign of weakness- it’s a declaration of faith in His unfailing love and provision, which manifests in a sense of peace and confidence that transcends our circumstances. True dependence means surrendering our entirety to God, leaving nothing out.

In the end, true victory is found not in our strength or understanding, but in our complete dependence on God.

 God is El Shaddai- The All- Sufficient One

“When Abram was 99 years old, Yahweh appeared to him. He said to Abram, “I am El Shaddai. Live in my presence with integrity.”- Genesis 17:1 (NOG)

The Bible reveals God by various names, each revealing a different aspect of His character. One of such names is El-Shaddai. As El-Shaddai, God is not limited by time or circumstance. He is the source of all things, possessing boundless power and resources beyond human comprehension. He is inexhaustible, unending and everlasting-more than we could ever need.

Why then do we continue to rely on man-made solutions that eventually run out, especially when God has asked us to depend on Him with our whole hearts?

Consider the creation story.

 

Imagine removing a plant from the earth or a fish from the waters- both would struggle to survive outside their intended environments. In the same way, God, our source, created man with His Hands and breathed life into us. Therefore, to detach ourselves from God, our true source, is to diminish our ability to thrive and flourish.

God is a practical reality, not a mere theological concept. By surrendering to His will and trusting in His provision, we tap into His limitless resources and wisdom. He guides our paths, provides for our needs, and empowers us to navigate life’s challenges victoriously.

Surrender, Depend and Trust

Why not surrender, depend and trust in God?

His ways are higher than ours, his wisdom far surpasses our intelligence, He is more powerful than we could ever be, and He knows the paths to follow, the decisions to make, and the opportunities to seize.

When we surrender, trust and depend on God, we release the burdens of worry and anxiety, open ourselves up to the fulfilment of His promises and the victory He has in store for us, knowing that He is in control of all our situations, working all things together for our good, even when our circumstances seem bleak or uncertain.

When we surrender, trust and depend on God, we are empowered to extend grace and forgiveness to others, and foster deeper connections and reconciliation; we are led to career opportunities we could never have imagined and success beyond our abilities.

When we surrender, trust and depend on God, we open the door to deeper intimacy with Him. It is not a sign of weakness but of profound strength.

As a practical way to grow in trust, set aside at least 15 minutes each day this week to have an open conversation with God. Share what’s on your mind, or sit in silence and listen for His voice. With patience and consistency with this practice, you will learn to depend on Him again.
